Liberty State Park:

Liberty State Park is located in the heart of New York City, which is an enchanting green oasis enclosing more than 1200 acres. It is one of the prime attractions in the city and is encircled by water on three sides. You can stroll through the picturesque park with your loved ones completely free of cost. It has splendid waterfront views, well-kept landscape, various benches all over the area, playground for children, picnic spots, boat launches, and many other exciting things to do like boating, fishing, touring a science museum and going on a cruise. Historical apex of the park has Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal, which was a significant transportation hub, two thirds of Ellis Island arrivals passed through here in the late 19th century. Another must visit in the park is Empty Sky, a memorial acknowledging those who died in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

The park has the historic Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal (CRRNJ), a grand setting for much of New Jersey’s transportation history in the northeast, sits at the north end of the park.

Things to do in Liberty State Park:

  1. Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island:

Ferries to the islands leave from Liberty State Park, even though the Statue of Liberty National Monument is officially an independent organisation. Since Statue Cruises is the only authorised ferry service, it is suggested that you purchase your ferry tickets online in advance.

  1. Liberty Science Center:

This 300,000-square-foot interactive science museum embraces visitors of all ages and depicts the largest planetarium in the western hemisphere along with 12 exhibition halls and a small aquarium. Regular events held at the Liberty Science Centre consist the well-liked LSC After Dark series, which provides live music and themed alcoholic drinks for attendees aged 21 and up.

  1. Monuments and memorials:

The State Park has three monuments and memorials:

  • The empty sky 9/11 memorial which pays tribute to New Jerseans who lost their lives in 2001 terrorist attacks.
  • The Leration monument which honors the victims of the Holocaust.
  • La Vela di Colombo a celebration of the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus, journey to the Americans, donated by the Italian government and the city of Genoa.

Liberty State Park’s Nature Center:

Liberty State Park’s Nature Center reopened in 2021 after nine years of renovation. The facility is an education center that revolves around ecology and history of the Hudson River Estuary. 

Walking and biking trails:

The park has miles of trails, one of which is a nature walk that takes you through a 36-acre salt marsh, which is one of the last natural areas of the Hudson River Estuary. The best views of the skyline of New York City can be found on the two-mile stroll that runs alongside the Hudson River.

Ferry:

Ferry service from Liberty State Park to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island is available through the year. Visit Statue City Cruises’ website to buy online tickets. Tickets can be bought at the ticket window inside the CRRNJ Terminal Building. Ferry services from Liberty State Park to Warren St in Jersey City and Brookfield Place in New York City is available all throughout the year.

Fishing:

Hudson River and Upper New York Bay provides best fishing opportunities. Some of the species are bluefish, shad, striped bass and blue claw crabs. New Jersey Fish and Wildlife Laws allow fishing and crabbing. Remember to discard all stray fishing line properly. 

Liberty State Park Boat Launching:

A boat launching ramp holds trailers up to 23 feet in length which enables area boaters and fishermen access to the Hudson River and nearby Atlantic Ocean. The Launching ramp is open throughout the year during the daylight hours. 

Eating places near Liberty State Park:

There are two restaurants: Liberty House Restaurant and the Restaurant at Maritime Park, both serve upscale American cuisine.

Liberty State Park Picnic Areas:

You can have picnic at the Southern end of the park located near the Administration Building. Picnic tables have stunning views of the harbor and skyline.
